SUMMERTIME!
Things are busy at Gooseworks as we enter another Summer filled with team development, strategy sessions, leadership trainings and staff retreats. What are you doing this Summer to develop your organization?
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Featured Program Option: Build-A-Boat As we put the days of 30 inch snowfalls behind us and look toward warmer weather, many organizations are looking for fun and creative options for outdoor team building. We’d like to share with you one of our favorites: Build-A-Boat. This team competition culminates in a real live boat race! Your group will be divided into teams of 4-8 participants and each team will be presented with the task of building a boat, using only the materials provided, that will support the weight of one participant. When complete, the boats will be launched and raced to determine the winner! This challenge emphasizes collaboration, communication, planning, individual strengths, and team unity. Build-A-Boat works for groups as small as 8 and as large as 200!
ARTICLES
Check out this article about organizational change written for Fast Company magazine by Dan Heath. The article suggests that we often try to bring about change by dispersing knowledge, but real change comes from emotions. This concept speaks to the Gooseworks' approach to education - the power of experiential learning. A conviction that comes about as the result of a personal experience rather than from the advice of an expert is much more likely lead to change. Great article!
Want Your Organization to Change? Put Feelings First Written by Dan Heath When we want people to change, we try to teach them something. We think if my Dad just understood the health complications obesity causes, he’d eat healthier. Or if my teenager just understood the danger of texting & driving, she’d quit it. The problem is this: Knowledge rarely leads to change.
And another great article from Tom Peters about the leadership importance of self-knowledge and sensitivity to emotions - even in the tough-guy world of sports. This is emotional intelligence at its finest!
Self Knowledge Reigns! Every Interaction Unique! Their Eyes, Not Yours! Written by Tom Peters
I happened across a New York Times interview, from April 10, of Andrew Cosslett, CEO Continental Hotels Group. I was particularly taken by the following two quotes from Cosslett, as he explained his success: "I think having a sense of self-awareness is very important, like how you impact each of the people you're with individually. ... "The whole thing about staying alive on a rugby field is about reliance on the guys around you. You need to gel them as a team, but each one responds individually. So it's about dealing with them on their terms, not yours. I'm very sensitive to how people are feeling at any given moment."
