







| Build-A-Boat Team Competition 
Overview: This team competition culminates in a real live boat race! Your group will be divided into teams of 4-8 participants and each team will be presented with the task of building a boat, using only the materials provided, that will support the weight of one participant. When complete, the boats will be launched and raced to determine the winner! This challenge emphasizes collaboration, communication, planning, individual strengths, and team unity. Participants will: Gain valuable insights through the exploration of team dynamics; Compete against each other in a high energy team environment; Increase awareness of self and team; Further develop a sense of camaraderie and team; Have Fun!
Customization: This program can be customized in a number of ways to meet your desired outcomes for the session. For example, we can add a presentation on team decision making and structure the debrief to focus on lessons learned around that topic. Or we can ask teams to build their boat as a metaphor for a new initiative that is being launched - a great way to facilitate creative thinking around a new project! Sample Agenda: Warm Up & Program Introduction: | Ensures that the group is energized and present for the day ahead. | Team Formation: Team split and brief competitive activities to set the stage for the boat building. | Allows each team to form an identity and sense of team. | Boat Building Lessons: Your facilitator will provide a brief overview of boat building materials, tools and techniques. | We do want those boats to float! | Planning / Design: This is required planning time. Teams are encouraged to create blueprints, develop strategy, and assign individual roles. | Facilitates full team participation. | Construction: Build those boats! | Requires teamwork under pressure. Each team must execute their design making sure to address all areas of competition. (Aesthetics, Presentation, Buoyancy) | Presentation & Christening | Presentation requirements can be customized to tie-in organizational themes or current projects/issues. | Race! One person from each team will race the boat! | | Discussion & Debrief: Participants will reflect on the entire day and identify lessons learned as well as workplace applications. | Facilitates the transfer of the team building experience back to the work environment. This can be more or less in-depth depending on the goals of the program. | Award Ceremony & Closing | |
Logistics: This program can be facilitated at any location of your choosing with a suitable body of water. Building can be done indoors or out which is nice flexibility in case of inclement weather. The program requires at least three hours to complete (four hours is recommended). Full day versions of the programs are also available. |
